Here’s how I created an adorable, easy care terrarium complete with a sleeping mermaid and treasure filled chest.
This terrarium is so simple to care for as the only living element is the air plant. Air plants or ‘Tillandsia’ are found naturally in trees and on rocks so no soil is required for them to grow. They simply need bright indirect light and occasional watering with a spray bottle or dunk into water, once every 2 – 3 weeks.
Our sleeping mermaid baby in shell was my starting point and the display evolved around her.
These glass globes are very popular at the moment and being round and clear like an underwater air bubble, it was a fitting container for this ocean themed garden.
The air plant was chosen not only because it’s low care, but also it’s shape and colour reminds me of seaside vegetation.
The inclusion of the treasure chest was inspired by Disney’s Jake and the Neverland Pirates, which often features both treasure and mermaids. After a little treasure hunt of my own (I didn’t have ‘gold doubloons’) I settled for filling the chest with pebbles spray painted gold, pearl and crystal (diamond) beads and the very precious little bottle of pixie dust.
These blue and frosted glass pebbles, new to My Little Fairy Garden, were the perfect finishing touch to this terrarium, creating a look of the waters edge on the beach sand.
